Carrefour Round Up Your Bill Initiative: Empowering Ugandan Communities

Carrefour Uganda, owned and operated by Majid Al Futtaim, is empowering vulnerable communities through its Round Up Your Bill -(RUYB) initiative. This initiative offers Carrefour customers the opportunity to round up their total bill at checkout, and the difference is donated. The proceeds are then donated to vulnerable groups from selected communities.

This initiative was first launched in September 2021 at the Oasis Mall and Metroplex Mall Carrefour branches. It has since expanded to all seven Carrefour supermarkets, including
those in Victoria Mall Entebbe, Acacia Mall, Lugogo Mall, and Village Mall. Each Carrefour branch proudly supports a local children’s home or school in need.
Through the RUYB initiative, significant improvements have been made to various community institutions, directly impacting the lives of the children they serve. Some of the completed projects include:
● Peculiar Child Care Support (Mukono): Renovation of classroom blocks, including painting the walls, roof, windows, and verandas.
● Kireka Home for Children with Special Needs: Renovation of the dining hall, provision of furniture, and replacement of windows, ceilings, and terrazzo floors.
● Mulago School for the Deaf: Renovation of toilets and bathrooms, kitchen, water supply areas, and repainting of classrooms and dormitories.
● St. Noah’s Ark Primary School (Entebbe): Construction of a new classroom block.
● Ntinda School for the Deaf: Renovation of girls'; and boys'; bathrooms and toilets, repainting of dormitories, and replacement of roof, ceiling, windows, and gutters.
● Kiswa Primary School: Installation of solar security lights in the compound.

In addition to the renovations, the children were provided with an assortment of grocery items such as rice, cooking oil, soap, sodas, beans, milk, wheat flour, maize flour, and other essential supplies. Participating is simple. At any of our checkout counters, you can choose to round up your bill to the nearest convenient amount. For example, if your purchase totals UGX 5,300, you may choose to round it up to UGX 6,000, contributing UGX 700 to our community partners. These small donations, collected from our generous customers, make a big difference.
Over the past four years, the RUYB program has achieved remarkable results, thanks to the overwhelming support of our customers. We are proud to announce that we have collectively raised over UGX 460M, with every shilling directly benefiting vital projects at our partner schools and children's homes. As we approach the fourth year of this program, it exemplifies our ongoing commitment to uplifting the Ugandan community and providing essential support to those who need it most. This initiative is a cornerstone of Carrefour's long-term dedication to the health and well-being of the Ugandan community. We believe in going beyond providing quality products at affordable prices; we are committed to being a responsible and supportive partner in the communities we serve.
